Profession & Standards

Throughout his career, Velson Horie has contributed to the development of the conservation profession and wider related activities. He is currently the treasurer of the International Institute for Conservation and a member of the CEN/BSI groups developing standards for conservation. In 1975, he joined the United Kingdom Institute of Conservation committee becoming its first publicity officer. He was active in the creation in 2005 of its successor organisation, the Institute of Conservation. As an Icon Trustee, he focussed on academic publications, professional discipline and project management. As the ICOM-CC Coordinator of the Natural History Working Group, he started its newsletter. He was awarded fellowship of the Museums Association in 1988 and the International Institute of Conservation in 1988, and achieved Accredited Conservator-Restorer status in 2000, having driven the development and implementation of professionalization of UK conservation.

Velson Horie was Treasurer of IIC, from 2009 to 2018 having been a member since 1973 (Fellow since 1988), and served on the editorial board of Studies in Conservation 1991-1994. This involvement is part of the effort to raise the standing of conservation in the wider heritage world. Current efforts are focusing on broadening IIC's charitable efforts and the reach of its excellent publications.

The process of developing PACR was started in 1996, growing to a collaboration with other organisations in the National Council for Conservation-Restoration, and implemented in 1999. Velson Horie chaired the creation and introduction of professional standards for all conservators in the UK. The ACR status for conservators has been progressively extended to all those actively involved in conservation and is rapidly becoming the essential qualification for a professional conservator. Velson Horie chaired the first ACR disciplinary committees for Icon.

Velson Horie is a UK expert on the British Standards Institution Committee: B/560 Conservation of tangible cultural heritage which also mirrors the CEN technical committee. He is a member of the "Glossary of damage" standard working group, attending Working Group meetings across Europe. The aim is to create common standards that can be used across Europe. This will improve communication between those caring for our heritage and thus raise the quality of the care it receives.

Velson Horie is co-editor of the multi-lingual Conservation Dictionary on paper and CDRom, as a partner in the Connect project funded by the European Union and coordinated by TEI (Athens). The Dictionary provides simultaneous translation of 3000 terms and definitions in 7 languages (English, Dutch, French, Italian, German, Greek, and Hungarian) in all areas of conservation practice and theory.
